In time I came to appreciate SD2 for its sandbox/simulator qualities in the AG campaigns that you really can't find elsewhere (even though AG has its problems). Sound design was worse, voice acting was worse or non-existent. The UI was worse, the aesthetics were worse - as you say the colour palette of all things was ruddy, and worse. Was this the same series? The same developer? Not only was the scale that much larger and impersonal compared to Normandy, the lack of artistic flair and polish on EVERYTHING was noticeable. Within 10 minutes of playing SD2 I was legitimately shocked and in disbelief (even during the tutorials). Once I was done with that I hopped into SD2 without really researching it. Yep I got into SD Normandy years after release and played the shit out of the campaigns and custom battles against AI very recently.
